Kilauea is the most...

Kilauea is the most active volcano beacause,Kīlauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Topographically Kīlauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kīlauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kīlauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth.

In fact, the summit of Kīlauea lies on a curving line of volcanoes that includes Mauna Kea and Kohala and excludes Mauna Loa. In other words, Kīlauea is to Mauna Kea as Lo`ihi is to Mauna Loa. Hawaiians used the word Kīlauea only for the summit caldera, but earth scientists and, over time, popular usage have extended the name to include the entire volcano.

11 October 2002 The eruption of Kīlauea Volcano that began in 1983 continues at the cinder-and-spatter cone of Pu`u `Ō `ō. Lava erupting from the cone flows through a tube system down Pulama pali about 11 km to the sea.

Kīlauea is the home of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess. Hawaiian chants and oral traditions tell in veiled form of many eruptions fomented by an angry Pele before the first European, the missionary Rev. William Ellis, saw the summit in 1823. The caldera was the site of nearly continuous activity during the 19th century and the early part of this century. Since 1952 there have been 34 eruptions, and since January 1983 eruptive activity has been continuous along the east rift zone. All told, Kīlauea ranks among the world's most active volcanoes and may even top the list.

Myths and Legends

Pele, the sacred living deity of the Hawaii's volcanoes, controls the limitless power of creation though her perseverance, molten strength, and unearthly beauty." Her passion emanates from her ancient existence. Revered and honored is the fire goddess. "She is my spiritual guardian & forever the heartbeat of my soul, continuously giving life of her land and it's people."

-Hawaii's National Park Service U.. Department of the Interior

A myth is a story that is told and retold over time. The Hawaiian people tell the myth that volcanoes were controlled by Pele the goddess of fire. They believe that Pele, the daughter of Mother Earth and Father Sky, used volcanoes to burn lands, melt rocks and to punish and kill people who didn't obey her. Some people still believe that Pele now lives in Kilauea.

About Kilauea

Kilauea is a volcano located on the island of Hawai'i. This volcano is a caldera and a shield volcano, a caldera is a crater with a diameter many times that of a volcanic vet formed by collapse of the central part of a volcano or by explosions of extraordinary violence. Kilauea means "spewing" or "much spreading", Kilauea is about 1,277m and 4,190ft, the area is 1430km and is about 13.7% of Hawai'i. Kilauea is present day active, Kilauea has been continuous since January 3, 1983. One of Kilauea's close city is Hilo. Hilo is the largest city on the island of Hawaii. The population of Hilo is about 40,759 people & about 5 miles away from Kilauea.Kilauea does not have one most famous lava flow, on the Chain of Craters, you drive down a road of dated rocks, like walking back into history of each flow. ON the island of Hawai'i, the ecosystem has been greatly affected. The Hawaiian Archipelago, once celebrated as islands of evolution, are now islands of extinction. The arrival of people changed forever the conditions that fostered the original diversity of life. Forests vanished as people cleared the land to plant crops and form communities. Polynesian and other settlers introduced many alien plants and animals, and some thrived and multiplied in their new home. Their muddy wallows make breeding grounds for mosquitoes that transmit avian malaria and pox to native birds. Mongooses, cats, and rats eat native birds and their eggs. Alien plants like the Faya and Kahlil ginger displace vast areas of Hawaiian forests. The onslaught of introduced plants and animals caused the extinction of countless native species and still threatens unique life forms on Hawai'i.
